Explore what happens when AI disclosures have to work across languages and interfaces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re chatting with AI.\u201d It looks like ordinary microcopy: a short sentence that might sit above a conversation window, beneath an avatar, or somewhere in an onboarding flow. But since August 2, 2026, words like these can have another job to do.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when the transparency obligations under Article 50 of the EU AI Act began to apply. For certain AI systems and AI-generated content, this means providers must ensure people are informed they&#8217;re interacting with AI.<\/p>\n<p>The regulation establishes what transparency needs to achieve. It doesn\u2019t prescribe a universal sentence like \u201cYou\u2019re chatting with AI.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Someone still has to turn that requirement into language that works for the user \u2014 and for a global, multilingual product, into language that works across markets and interfaces. That\u2019s where a legal obligation becomes a language challenge.<\/p>\n<h2>What Article 50 Requires<\/h2>\n<p>Article 50 isn\u2019t a single rule requiring every AI product to display the same disclaimer. It introduces different transparency obligations depending on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the type of AI system,<\/li>\n<li>the content involved,<\/li>\n<li>and how the technology is being used.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The distinction between <strong>providers<\/strong> (who develop or have AI systems developed and place them on the market) and <strong>deployers<\/strong> (who use them in a professional context) shapes who\u2019s responsible for what.<\/p>\n<p>Article 50 covers several scenarios, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>AI systems that interact directly with people,<\/li>\n<li>AI-generated or manipulated audio, images, video, and text,<\/li>\n<li>emotion recognition and biometric categorization systems,<\/li>\n<li>deepfakes,<\/li>\n<li>and AI-generated content published to inform the public on matters of public interest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For this article, we\u2019ll stay with one example: an AI chatbot built into a digital product.<\/p>\n<p>Under Article 50(1), providers must <strong>design interactive systems so people know they\u2019re interacting with AI, <\/strong>unless that\u2019s already obvious. Article 50(5) adds a communication parameter: the information must be <strong>clear and distinguishable<\/strong>, and <strong>reach the person no later than their first interaction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>AI Transparency Has Two Audiences: Humans and Machines<\/h2>\n<p>For providers of systems that generate synthetic audio, images, video, or text, Article 50 also requires marking outputs in a machine-readable format, so they can be detected as artificially generated. Other obligations focus on making sure a person understands what they\u2019re interacting with.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, some information needs to be <strong>machine-readable<\/strong>. Other information needs to <strong>make sense to the person on the other side of the screen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Machine-readable marking can rely on technical mechanisms that users don\u2019t need to see or interpret themselves. Human-facing transparency works differently: people need to notice and understand the information when they encounter it in the product or interface.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission\u2019s 2026 guidance makes this tangible in its discussion of deepfakes. A hidden, machine-readable marker may help a system identify AI-generated content, but it doesn\u2019t necessarily tell the person watching it what they need to know.<\/p>\n<p>For people, transparency relies on communication. <strong>And a global product has to make that communication work in more than one language<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>What Happens When Your AI Product Speaks 15 Languages?<\/h2>\n<p>Imagine that same chatbot operating in English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, Japanese, and ten other languages. The underlying requirement hasn\u2019t changed. But almost everything around its execution can: sentence length, natural phrasing, available interface space, reading patterns, terminology used elsewhere in the product, and user expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Picture a compact disclosure that works perfectly in English. The localized German version needs more space. The interface truncates it on a smaller screen. A linguist shortens the sentence to fix the layout, without knowing which part of the original wording Legal considers essential.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where a seemingly simple translation starts involving several teams:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Legal<\/strong> determines what needs to be communicated.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Product and UX<\/strong> determine where and how it appears.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Localization<\/strong> has to make the communication work across languages without losing sight of either.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>When Legal Copy Becomes UX Copy<\/h2>\n<p>Problems appear when those stages are treated separately.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Legal approves the source text.<\/li>\n<li>UX builds the component around it.<\/li>\n<li>Localization then receives a five-word string with a character limit\u2026 and no explanation of why those words are there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s missing is context<\/strong>: not just what the source says, but what the message needs to accomplish.<\/p>\n<p>Before localizing a disclosure like this, you need to consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Where does it appear, and how prominent is it?<\/li>\n<li>Does the localized wording remain understandable?<\/li>\n<li>Does it fit naturally within the available space?<\/li>\n<li>Is the terminology consistent with the rest of the product?<\/li>\n<li>Does the localization team know which elements of the message are essential?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because a sentence that looks perfectly clear in a translation management system can behave very differently once it\u2019s squeezed into a mobile banner or displayed for three seconds during onboarding.<\/p>\n<h2>The Fewer the Words, the More Context Your Linguists May Need<\/h2>\n<p>Three or four words can look insignificant next to the algorithms, governance frameworks, and technical infrastructure behind an AI product. But those words sit at the exact point where the system meets the person using it.<\/p>\n<p>The words alone don\u2019t tell a linguist everything they need to know about the job they&#8217;re doing: which product, which market, or which constraint made this particular phrasing the right one. A five-word string doesn&#8217;t carry that reasoning on its own; the context has to come with it.<\/p>\n<p>The smaller the copy, the easier it is to underestimate it.
