This sector aims to define its characteristic features in terms of its most immediate application, or in other words, intercultural concordance in different industries and, similarly, the different translator profiles are studied in order to accurately develop the best specialized training strategies and the best practices that must be followed to achieve optimum performance. In this vein, translation is of great importance when breaking down language barriers in internationalization processes, in both technical fields (life sciences, information technologies, intellectual property, etc.) and artistic fields (film, literature, etc.). Here, translation connects cultures, promotes knowledge sharing and evokes the senses. However, there are many who believe that translation, as an intellectual exercise, is very valuable for other purposes, such as language learning.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, translation was not well regarded within language teaching dynamics due to the belief that it pushes the native language into second place. Having said that, many institutions now consider that this activity offers significant advantages to students, and this strategy is slowly being incorporated in the design of language courses. Therefore, this article delves deeper into this educational resource, its characteristics and its various applications.<\/p>\n<p>After overcoming the aforementioned unpopularity, translations returned to education with renewed vigor. Language teachers and researchers have realized that translation is present in any language learning process and believe that encouraging it can be beneficial. Some of these reasons include the fact that translation helps us to consolidate our knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and oral expression. Typically, we make an effort to memorize direct matches that we forget after a time, but if we work with foreign language texts, pause to consider their words and expressions, and take time to think of how to properly express them in our own language, we will gradually create a link with the studied language that slowly settles in our subconscious. Similarly, translation is a resource that helps us observe and remember. This idea is closely linked to another aspect; translation forces us to look closely at the purpose behind the text and develop our reading comprehension skills. In other words, as we know, it is impossible to correctly translate without understanding the meaning of the text and reflecting on issues such as tone and target audience. Therefore, translation in these cases moves away from literal translation and we attempt to reproduce the meaning of the source in our native language. This in turn helps us become acquainted with idiomatic expressions used in the foreign language to express what is expressed using different idioms in our own language. Both translation and language learning are based on careful observation in order to functionally reproduce an idea. In other words, we learn the conventions of both languages and cultures, assimilating them more easily. Lastly, it is also important to note that translation, in addition to being the professional activity we usually deal with, features in interpersonal communications in a more light-hearted context as explaining the use of foreign words and expressions to people who do not fully understand this language or occasionally acting as an interpreter in conversations between speakers who do not know one of the languages used is common in our day to day. Translation is indeed a very valuable resource for developing our language and communication skills, in both our native and studied languages.<\/p>\n<p>With regards to using and including translation in teaching methodologies, emphasis is usually placed on the fact that it should be considered a fifth competence, in addition to the conventional four competencies (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). In addition, it should not be considered to be of greater importance as the latter competencies were purposefully designed, serve specific purposes and have been proven to help students\u2019 language development when applied together. Translation is a fun and engaging activity that can be a helpful tool for learning, and even act as a distraction. Likewise, it is a good idea to work on both reverse and indirect translation, even though they may pose various levels of difficulty. When translating in any direction, we must carefully read and decode the meaning in order to then consider how best to express the same content in another language, that is, \u201crecode\u201d the message. To make this task more interesting, teachers are advised to choose texts on popular topics or that are of interest to the students. It is also important to make sure that the difficulty level of these texts matches the students\u2019 proficiency level. This ensures different aims are achieved depending on the difficulty. It can help beginners detect false friends, notice the differences between the two language structures and learn oblique equivalences, namely, indirect equivalences between words and expressions. It helps intermediate students perfect their language choices when expressing themselves and acquire more specialized vocabulary.
