Although at first glance it may seem to be a path to a very specific destination, that of fully mastering a language, it is actually an endless journey during which knowledge is acquired at different rates and more or less regularly. On the one hand, there will be times when we feel inspired to internalize large amounts of vocabulary or practice oral understanding using different audiovisual resources. On the other hand, we will need to pause and take a breath when we feel overwhelmed and saturated in order to start studying and practicing again with more enthusiasm. Just as people acquire a second language at different rates, the paths they take and the knowledge they gather while on this path are also different. While it is true that a set of basic concepts is considered to be known depending on the level, the resources that people access influence the development of these concepts. This means that people will slowly assimilate expressions based on these references. Therefore, we sometimes see changes in aspects of a person who uses a second language, especially in cases that do not involve bilingualism. Of course, these aspects are not related to linguistic and extra-linguistic elements, which are inherent to language change (accent, intonation, etc.), but rather seem to also have a recognizable impact on personality.<\/p>\n<p>This is partially due to the fact that speaking a second language, especially when studying, is similar to playing a character. In many learning processes, teachers recommend that their students look closely at native speakers in study resources, such as actors in films and series, conference speakers or <em>YouTubers<\/em>, paying attention to how they express themselves (word choice in particular situations, accents, filler words, non-verbal behavior) to then reproduce them in real life, thereby being more natural by imitating these people. What is interesting is that during these processes, which are unconscious but rather inadvertent for the student, we tend to use our favorite characters or people that we particularly empathize with as a reference. It is therefore unsurprising that we slowly start incorporating their expressions and even their behaviors into our own, even putting ourselves in that person\u2019s shoes when starting to speak this second language in order to feel more confident. In practice, this means that there may be times when we deal with the same situation differently depending on the language we use. For example, some people are shy when making a complaint in person in their native language (perhaps because the emotional connection with their own language is stronger and increases this sense of embarrassment), but if a similar situation arises in the context of the second language, they may feel less embarrassed when their <em>alter ego<\/em> speaks and can express themselves differently. It could be said that there are things that we would not dare to do in our own language that we would be comfortable with when speaking a foreign language.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, it is well known that a new language is a window into a new way of seeing the world and interpreting reality. As a result, studying a new language can make us more aware of different realities that do not exist in our native language and it is possible that, over time, we may assimilate them and make them our own. Many language scholars believe that language reflects our fundamental values in a culture and that, at the same time, it is this culture that shapes these fundamental values. For example, it may be the case that a student from a culture belonging to those that are \u201cnon-contact\u201d, such as North European, Japanese or American, starts to develop traits of \u201ccontact cultures\u201d, such as Mediterranean, Latin and Arabic cultures. Some of these traits can include speaking loudly, shortening communication exchange times and using touch as a non-verbal resource during conversations. Our own subjective perceptions and beliefs in relation to a language are also involved in this phenomenon. A 2006 study by Nair\u00e1n Ram\u00edrez-Esparza, a social psychology professor at the University of Connecticut, asked bilingual American-Mexican citizens to do a personality test in English and Spanish that measured five essential qualities: extraversion, agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness and neuroticism. The results showed higher scores in extraversion, agreeableness and conscientiousness, which in the researchers\u2019 opinion, reflected the idiosyncrasy of \u201cnon-contact cultures\u201d, in which assertiveness and agreeableness are much more highly valued superficially, while these aspects are not as important in \u201ccontact cultures\u201d. In a subsequent study, in which the participants were asked to write a personal essay, those that did the test in Spanish wrote about family, their relationships and interests, while those who did the test in English talked about their achievements, their time at university and their routines. Researchers believe that subconscious connections are made between the language and the values assigned to it. It is, of course, a local study and a larger sample size or more test types would be needed in order to achieve more accurate results.<\/p>\n<p>What is clear though is that language students and speakers tend to observe native speakers in order to learn how to naturally and effectively express themselves, which seems to affect the <em>alter ego<\/em> that we portray in our second-language relationships.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ref. de la imagen: <\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/demilde\/8234390082\">https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/demilde\/8234390082<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Learning a language is a unique and enriching experience for each and every person.
