The provision of language services is an activity known for a number of popular services, such as translation, interpretation and localization. In fact, we know that this industry is made up of a wide range of language services that together aim to meet the communication needs of people in different contexts, all of them being equally important. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that when talking about this activity, there is a general tendency to think only about translation, understood as the reproduction of content expressed in one language and through a channel to another language (usually, on the same channel). This causes a certain unawareness at a global level and even gives rise to stereotypes: translators only <\/em>translate, translators are like dictionaries and know how to translate any word they are asked about, people who master a couple of languages can be professional translators, etc. Despite this, translation professionals deal with all kinds of language tasks that either complement their own translation\/interpretation tasks, or exist independently and have their own place within the industry, the demand for which varies depending on specific markets. An example of this is intralingual translation, which we already discussed in Intralingual translation in the biosanitary field<\/em><\/a>, where we explain that it is a matter of “interpreting verbal signs and interpreting them by means of other verbal signs in the same language<\/em>” and “expressing a statement with other words for a specific purpose”. In other words, translation does not only exist between pairs of languages, but it can occur within the same language. When does this happen? As we explained in the cited article, intralingual translation can be used to reformulate concepts, that is, to express the same idea in a different way. This is very useful, for example, when changing the register of a text. But, moreover, in daily translation activity there is another example of “intralingual translation”: adaptations between variants of the same language.<\/p>\n

It is well known that a language can be made up of different variants. Although one may fall into the incorrect thinking that one of these variants is the main one and the rest are derived from it, the truth is that a language travels to different parts of the world, is acquired by different communities of speakers, and evolves naturally throughout its history. Therefore, we must think of a language as an entity that can be embodied in different horizontal variants that, of course, share a number of common features, such as grammar and a significant percentage of vocabulary. For this reason, one same language is spoken in different ways around the world, and this is a very important matter from the linguistic point of view, since the markets of its speakers will be different from the linguistic and cultural point of view. As a result, internationalization strategies cannot be exactly the same; they will have to adapt to each of the communities of speakers, know their particularities, and know how to create the desired effect. Furthermore, translators also specialize in tasks of this type within the translation industry, so now we will talk about what aspects should be taken into account when carrying out this work.<\/p>\n

When managing a translation project, it may be convenient to ask or indicate to which language variant the assignment is to be localized. In the case of Spanish, there is a clear distinction between European Spanish and Latin American Spanish, but, depending on the context, it may be necessary to further specify the variant and select a regional or national variant (e.g., Colombian Spanish, Argentinian Spanish, Spanish from the Canary Islands, etc.). This may be due to the target audience using their own local vocabulary or to the desire to focus the translated material on a more specific audience.<\/p>\n

In the general professional experience, it is most common to manage projects that are to be translated into either European Spanish or Latin American Spanish, or, at the same time, adapt projects from one of the variants to another. This is the case of large companies that create localized marketing strategies for the different Hispanic markets, or also when a Spanish-speaking company in one part of the world wants to introduce its products in another part of the world where Spanish is also spoken.<\/p>\n

At this point, translators usually act as language advisors and provide advice as to which aspects should be localized and how it should be done. On the one hand, there is the cultural factor, since in the process of internationalization it is essential to bridge the gap between cultural distances and make sure that the target culture correctly receives the message and responds to persuasion. On the other, there is the linguistic factor, where translation professionals will have to detect the differences between the two language systems and make the necessary conversions to adapt the textual material to the language variant in question.<\/p>\n

For example, in Spanish, when carrying out this task, the most common aspects are distinguishing between the use of the personal pronoun “t\u00fa” and “usted” (choosing between the informal and formal versions of the word “you” is important because it gives the recipient a different impression, making them feel more distance, respect, or a close and personal feeling). Although pronunciation and accent are obvious aspects of each language variant, they are not relevant in written channels, so we do not consider them here. The most striking element, however, are the changes in vocabulary and terminology. Due to historical evolution, groups of speakers within the same language can denominate the same reality with different words. Likewise, in some Hispanic cultures, there is the phenomenon that the incorporation of foreign words is much more widespread than in others, so it is also important to know when to translate.<\/p>\n

Adapting between language variants, specifically variants of Spanish, is a meticulous task that arises from the growing demand for more specialized localization processes. For this reason, it should be carried out by professionals who know the particularities of each language system and know how to successfully transmit messages between different cultures.<\/p>\n
