{"id":53103,"date":"2022-09-08T17:38:35","date_gmt":"2022-09-08T15:38:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/montero-ls.com\/red-flags-in-translation-services-ads\/"},"modified":"2022-09-08T17:38:35","modified_gmt":"2022-09-08T15:38:35","slug":"red-flags-in-translation-services-ads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/montero-ls.com\/en\/red-flags-in-translation-services-ads\/","title":{"rendered":"RED FLAGS IN TRANSLATION SERVICES ADS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the industry of language service providers, mastering the art of showcasing our talent is essential to establish professional relationships with other colleagues, and to establish commercial relationships between interested parties, whether it is between a company and a client, between a freelance translator and a client, or between a freelance translator and an agency, to cite some of the most frequent examples. When we present ourselves to the market, we are looking for a concrete response and we have a tendency to achieve results in a short time. In part, this derives from the very nature of the translation sector, as there is a large number of professionals, and project deadlines are usually quite competitive. The consequences of this are manifold. On the one hand, in some business contexts, there is not enough time to select translators following meticulous criteria, so that, when a minimum profile is not available in the existing portfolio, there is a tendency to assess a reduced sample of the total number of applications received. On the other hand, there is a technique of posting the project requirements in virtual marketplaces in the form of an ad and have the translators themselves finding the assignment, reading the description and sending an application if they think their skills are a good fit for the task. As a result, the unspoken law of \u201cfirst come, first served\u201d comes into play, in other words, projects end up being assigned to the most proactive translator who responds to the project ad and gets their profile verified. Although hiring translation agencies have protocols in place in order to filter and source what they are after, there is always the possibility of an undesirable profile sneaking in and putting the translation project in jeopardy, as well as the commercial relationship with the client and ultimately, the use of the translated text. The urgency to capture the attention of potential clients and hiring translation agencies has led some people to develop strategies that seek to make an impact, promising suggestive services and accepting all kinds of conditions, so that they appear as a more than acceptable option in the eyes of those seeking to provide language services. For this reason, it is common to find advertisements for translation services on the Internet that, far from corresponding to the real skills of the professionals involved, exaggerate qualities, add potential services or simply act as a bait to get the job and then proceed in a fraudulent and unprofessional manner. The real risk for companies with cross-linguistic localization needs and for translation agencies is that, if they do not pay attention, they may entrust a task to a person with insufficient or, in the worst-case scenario, no translation skills, who will deliver anything as valid, which may not even be a minimally reliable translation of the original. Then, what is behind these fraudulent and sometimes illegal profiles? Generally, these people are motivated by the goal of financial gain, which is perfectly logical and to be expected in a commercial context. However, the problem is that they seek to achieve tasks indiscriminately, even if they do not have the language skills, technical skills or training required to perform the task with any level of proficiency.       <\/p>\n<p>  To do so, they resort to different strategies, which we should be aware of in order to be alert and recognize potential scammers before hiring them. In many cases, it is also recommended to report them. Why? This brings us to a common type of fraud in translation advertisements, especially those accompanied by professional CVs. Sadly, there is a practice whereby some people steal the CVs of real professionals, adapt them (or not) and use them to apply for jobs or to get involved in specific translation projects, and then pretend to do a job that does not meet any of the minimum quality requirements. This is discussed in more depth in <a href=\"https:\/\/montero-ls.com\/scammers-estafadores-en-la-industria-de-la-traduccion\/\"><em>Scammers: swindlers of the translation industry<\/em><\/a>. On the other hand, there are a number of signs that should be considered red flags or, at the very least, lead us to find out more about the profile of a candidate. In this context , one of the most common advertisements is one that advertises a miracle solution, i.e., a translator who offers himself for any type of assignment regardless of the specialization area. Although professionals trained in several fields abound, it is not usual for them to have a complete mastery in different areas of specialization, especially if there is an excess of areas listed. In the same vein, it often raises suspicions when the same professional offers all kinds of language combinations indiscriminately, and in both directions. This is unusual for two reasons, the first being that translators generally translate into their native language only, although they can also do so in the opposite direction if they are professionally qualified to do so. In any case, what should make us suspicious is that they offer a large number of language combinations and knowledge of different languages, since, realistically, this usually translates as substandard proficiency. Finally, it is interesting to note that this triad of far-fetched promises is topped off by the one concerning deadlines: they claim to be able to take on any volume of words for any deadline. This must be logically considered, as some orders, given the word count, require specific work times if we assume that they are going through the corresponding quality controls. Ultimately, in the translation industry, there is no such thing as good, nice and cheap (this is another aspect, as they tend to attract attention with extremely low rates in order to convince, a mistake which is often dearly paid for later in the correction of errors).
