On the one hand, this is because interlinguistic conversion services fall within the context of knowledge and dissemination, or in other words, translation is an activity that serves an area of knowledge, an industrial sector, a business purpose or a human need. This means that as these areas and sectors evolve and new ones arise, translation and the professionals who work in this sector must stay up to date, grow at the same rate and seek to always be one step ahead, allowing them to make well-informed decisions when adapting the target language of new materials created in novel or developing fields. On the other hand, translation itself has undergone numerous changes in work methodology with the aim of, where possible and depending on the age, making this activity easier, more efficient, productive and, of course, as accurate as possible. Thus, translation has evolved throughout history starting from the handwritten translation of an original as a localized copy, to the use of computers, and the revolution of the Internet and innovation through the use of today&#8217;s cutting-edge technology to streamline and optimize processes at a time when immediacy and resource economy are a priority. As a result, translation is considered a field that is constantly developing over time and regarding which future predictions can be made. Who would have thought 50 years ago that translators would work from their own homes in front of a computer, globally connected and using programs to generate automatic translations that are post-edited and then undergo a quality assessment? It is more than likely that many of these words would be foreign to them or out of context, so who knows what the future holds for the translation profession in another 50 years\u2019 time?<\/p>\n<p>This shows that we are not entirely prepared to fully embrace the future of translation, or more specifically, the developments in this business activity can evolve so fast that we become outdated during our career. This is why many translators strive to continue training and learning so they do not get left behind and be in good intellectual standing to take on new technological and cognitive challenges as they develop. What specific things can we do to remain relevant, up-to-date with the reality that surrounds us and improve our adaptability? This article summarizes a set of good practices for this purpose.<\/p>\n<p>One of the first aspects to consider is the linguistic or idiomatic factor. The language that different communities speak is a metaphoric living organism, the resources and forms of which continuously change. Translators must therefore be aware that over time expressions currently used will change and give way to new ones or to different ways of configuring discourse that govern the writing style of future texts. Thus, an important piece of advice is to never stop learning and discovering in both one\u2019s native language and second languages. With regards to the former, this is because, since direct translations are the most common, natural and idiomatic translations are needed that are adapted to the target audience, both in terms of style or level of expertise. As for the latter, it relates to the clear need to keep learning and correctly decoding the content of source materials in order to identify the message and successfully recode it in the target language. It is essential in both cases to be in direct contact with the language and its speakers, either through cultural consumption or direct interactions with people. Translators must see themselves as social beings.<\/p>\n<p>Translators must keep abreast of the developments in the fields of expertise for which they translate or for which they wish to do so. In fact, this is compulsory in the scientific and technical field, but it is highly advisable for any sector. Being aware of the progress and developments in a field of study helps us as translators to be able to write on it and translate into our target language, or know the linguistic needs of the target audience.<\/p>\n<p>On the subject of needs, one of the most useful tips is to always keep in mind the feedback and needs of our clients. They are the ones who make it possible for a language conversion business to exist and this is why it is important to know their expectations, the language requirements imposed by their sectors and what type of services they need to incorporate into their internationalization strategies.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it is important to not just look outside the translation sector, but also within it, as it is a rich source of training and news. Participating in translation congresses, conferences and talks is an ideal way to keep in touch with other professionals and see the analyses given on the developing trends of the sector.
