With this in mind, it\u2019s hardly surprising that Asians refrain from using these resources.<\/p>\n<h2>How humor and laughter vary in different countries.<\/h2>\n<p>Laughter may be a universal language, but how we express and appreciate humor is rooted in cultural norms, beliefs, and values.<\/p>\n<p>Let us analyze three different cultures, two of which share the same language:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Japan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">In this country, <strong>humor is limited to family and friends<\/strong>, and not acceptable with strangers. Also, with Japan placing great importance on hierarchy, humor doesn\u2019t find a place across the social ladder or in formal situations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Now, what\u2019s humor like in Japan? It\u2019s innocent, harmless fun. The Japanese rarely make jokes at the expense of others. Besides, they steer clear of taboo subjects and dirty jokes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>United States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>American humor leans towards individualism<\/strong>. Take stand-up comedy, which is about sharing personal experiences and challenging societal norms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Techniques such as hyperbole and playful antics are part and parcel of their kind of humor. It\u2019s all about performance and exaggeration. Think of iconic figures like the Marx Brothers or Woody Allen.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>U.K<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">British humor is synonymous with <strong>clever wit<\/strong>, finding laughs in the subtle and the ironic. Remember Benny Hill and Mr. Bean?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">And here&#8217;s the twist: despite their prim and proper image, Brits do enjoy the goofy side of humor.<\/p>\n<h2>Studies on intercultural humor.<\/h2>\n<p>In 2001, psychologist Dr. Richard Wiseman conducted research into intercultural humor. His project \u201cLaughLab\u201d aimed to find the world\u2019s funniest joke. In total, 40,000 jokes were rated by over 350,000 people from 70 countries.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the conclusions drawn:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>France, Denmark, and Belgium enjoy <strong>surreal humor and jokes on uneasy topics<\/strong> (e.g., death or illness).<\/li>\n<li>People from the Republic of Ireland, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand lean towards <strong>jokes with clever wordplays<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Americans and Canadians favor jokes that portray a strong sense of superiority, often involving <strong>characters looking foolish<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Preserving the same sense of humor in another language?<\/h2>\n<p>Humor relies on different aspects of language and culture to achieve its purpose: making you laugh. That\u2019s why, when telling a joke in a different language, you\u2019re likely to struggle with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Puns and wordplay. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Let\u2019s start by defining both words:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Puns are a form of wordplay, which uses similar-sounding words with different meanings.<\/li>\n<li>Wordplay refers to the use of verbal wit to create double meanings and ambiguity. But bear in mind this won\u2019t convey the spirit of the joke. You\u2019ll find yourself with a flat rendition of what was humorous in the source language.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">As American writer E.B. White put it, \u201cHumor can be dissected, as a frog can, but the thing dies in the process and the innards are discouraging to any but the purely scientific mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/montero-ls.com\/en\/services\/branding\/\">Transcreating<\/a><\/strong><strong> the joke<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">In other words, adapting the joke so it\u2019s still funny in a new language and resonates with the target culture.
