Two clear examples are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Argentina \u2013 providing relief in its currency crisis<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">This country is now in the midst of a cycle of extreme currency devaluation (51.6% in the year leading up to July 2023). This, together with towering inflation and restrictions against buying foreign currencies, makes it difficult for people to save.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">And they\u2019ve found an escape from this situation thanks to crypto. In particular, stablecoins have become very popular.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Venezuela \u2013 resisting the oppression of the Maduro regime<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">During the Covid crisis, doctors and nurses received direct aid thanks to cryptocurrency. With Maduro having full control of the banks and refusing financial help, making a direct cash transfer was out of the question.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">So, cryptocurrency wallets were the answer. Funds were transferred to trusted individuals, who in turn made sure they went to healthcare professionals.<\/p>\n<h2>El Salvador \u2013 Bitcoin becomes legal tender.<\/h2>\n<p>This Spanish-speaking country made history in crypto in September 2021. It became the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender alongside the U.S. dollar.<\/p>\n<p>A significant part of the Salvadorans doesn\u2019t have access to banking services. So, the government aimed to <strong>increase financial inclusion by providing them with other financial options<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Crypto would also make it easier to send remittances to El Salvador from abroad. Remittances play a crucial role in the Salvadoran economy, accounting for 26.2% of the country&#8217;s GDP.<\/p>\n<p>Now, this is how the government went about Bitcoin adoption:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Bitcoin as legal tender.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">As of September 2021, Bitcoin became an official means of payment, alongside the U.S. dollar.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Launch of Chivo Wallet.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">This mobile wallet app allows users to send and receive Bitcoin. Plus, it offers incentives (e.g., a $30 bonus to encourage adoption).<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Bitcoin ATMs available.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Bitcoin ATMs across the country make it easier for citizens to buy and sell Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>The government\u2019s adoption of crypto has led bitcoin companies to look into El Salvador.
