We recently uploaded an article<\/a> discussing the importance of localizing websites and how to select the languages in which to publish them on the Internet. The fact is that in this age of digitalization in which we find ourselves and in which our sector is so immersed, it is essential to provide users with quick, intuitive, attractive and customized access to different sales sites for goods and services. As we have discussed previously, it is a question of building trust and making people feel that a brand is aligned with them, even if it is in another country. This means that linguistic and cultural barriers must be broken down. While it is true that websites are an essential resource for a successful online presence, many companies communicate with consumers through additional tools, such as applications, or apps<\/em> for short. Software applications are programs that perform specific tasks. Consequently, in the case of brands, they are used to create a comprehensive channel of communication between the consumer and these brands so that the consumer can access a catalog of goods, services or information through software<\/em> that supports all the actions making up the business relationship between client and company. The true importance of this resource is that these applications can be downloaded onto mobile smart devices, so consumers can access them at all times, and they can also be linked to other applications, such as banking, in order to streamline the purchase process and automate it in the future. This is why companies with an application, or that are thinking of developing one for the first time to target foreign markets, must correctly localize these tools and ensure the highest quality. Failure to reach consumers in their own language will likely result in a futile effort.<\/p>\n

In this regard, in today\u2019s article we set out a series of initial considerations that all teams responsible for the internationalization of an application should take into account before pursuing interlinguistic localization tasks.<\/p>\n

Organizing the localization of an app<\/em> is no simple task, but bearing in mind where we are in the process and the needs we need to meet will help us prepare it. According to this publication<\/a>, if we want to localize a large application that has yet to undergo internationalization, we can use predetermined localization libraries such as React or frameworks like Angular. In any case, it is important to know at what stage we are at in the project. For example, if the localization project as such has not yet started, it will be easier to make certain decisions regarding design. Depending on the type of web application software<\/em> we select, we can choose between several library and framework repositories. Afterwards, we will have to ensure that the initial stages of development are correctly followed. In the event that the project has already been launched but there is a small number of users, there may not be too many issues with a small codebase, where we can add sentences from the internationalization library or translations without any major changes. On the other hand, if the project has been launched with a large number of users, the codebase will be larger, users will have used it for longer and this can make things difficult. This is why experts recommend making gradual localization changes so that the number of users affected is limited.<\/p>\n

In any case, one of the most important aspects is to find specialized translators to work on localizing the application. It is of vital importance to find affordable and quality translation services. In this why, we can adapt the content of the application to be launched and we will be certain that the text is shown correctly. Finding a language service provider with professional localization services can be complicated, but it is essential in order to guarantee the global success of the process and it is advisable to invest in this stage. It will sometimes be necessary to have translators with programming skills that know how to incorporate the new content into the code and, at other times, the translator will only need to translate the text to be imported.<\/p>\n

Therefore, it is a good idea to use a translation management system to manage the translation content and other types of localized material. Many companies believe that this is expendable, but that is not the case. Localizing a commercial application does not simply entail writing some JSON files and leaving the application to use them. They are data sets that must be stored and traced in a system so that they can be referenced in the future or kept under change control. After all, we have to think of the future savings and benefits of having a managed system for the translations. Investing in peace of mind is always a recipe for success.<\/p>\n

We will then need to select a suitable internationalization library. To do so, we need to look at the ease of adding a library to the existing code, the effectiveness of implementation or whether there is community support, as well as carefully following all the steps of the programming process itself, in which the localized sentences will be inserted.<\/p>\n

Preparing an application for localization is not an intimidating process. It involves methodical and careful steps to ensure that we have all the necessary translation services, automated tools and tasks before integrating them. After all, improving each product lies within our hands and we are responsible for delivering the best content that is relevant to our clients.<\/p>\n
