Language studies, and more specifically how they relate to anthropology, largely focus on the way in which language use affects one’s personality and their behavior, both as an individual and collectively, in a group. Research in this field tries to answer some of the biggest questions, like whether it is true that our understanding of the world is shaped by the language we think in, or whether we develop language in a direction that reflects our own thinking. Along the way, there have been some very interesting discoveries about the particularities of different cultures and the languages in which they communicate, as well as their connection to other cultures to which they relate. In this regard, studies are sometimes conducted which seek to determine the impact of a second language (generally understood as a learned foreign language) on a speech community, on how they express themselves, and even on their sociological evolution. Some rather unusual experiments, for example, take a look at how often people lie depending on the language they are using, whether it be their native language or a learned second language.<\/p>\n

In fact, this matter still raises certain questions, and that’s because there are two opposing schools of thought that defend conflicting viewpoints. Is it easier for us to lie when we talk in our own language or do we lie more often and better when speaking in another language? In today’s article, we discuss two related experiments so that you can come to your own conclusions.<\/p>\n

On the one hand, there are studies which seem to demonstrate that we lie more when we speak in a foreign language. To prove this, a group of scientists explored the results of a study conducted simultaneously in various parts of the world, such as Spain, the United States and Israel. Specifically, the aim was to know whether people were more or less honest when speaking in a foreign language or in their native language. Their conclusions seem to be clear: “When speaking in a foreign language, people usually lie less than when speaking their native language”, explains Albert Costa, co-author of the research project. To reach this conclusion, a group of people underwent a rather strange test.<\/p>\n

Each of the participants (185 individuals in Barcelona whose native language was Spanish and also spoke English) were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the first where they had to speak in Spanish, and the second where they had to speak in English. They were then asked to enter a room where they would be alone, without any kind of monitoring. Once inside, they had to roll a die and then report the resulting number. All participants did this on a premise that, in turn, posed a moral dilemma: “they all would receive an amount in euros[en el caso de Barcelona] [in the case of Barcelona] equal to the number rolled on the die”. Therefore, if they rolled a 6, they would get \u20ac 6, whereas if they rolled a 1, they would get \u20ac 1. Obviously, only the subject who rolled the die in the room would know its true number.<\/p>\n

At first, the researchers assumed that, statistically speaking, the same number of possible results would typically be obtained, that is, the same number of sixes, fours and twos. Provided that, of course, the participants were telling the truth. If they acted for their own economic benefit, more sixes than twos would be expected. And, of course, that’s what happened. They noticed that when the participants told the number in English, the number of sixes and fives was lower than when they told it in Spanish. Thus, the effect is clearly significant and is evident in all samples of the different geographical locations.<\/p>\n

Researchers suspect that there may be two explanations for this phenomenon. One would be that when someone is speaking a foreign language, they are less emotional, meaning that this decrease in emotion would make the person more analytical and aware that lying is wrong. The second would also involve the command of language: when we speak a foreign language, processing is slower, more costly and that may stop our first impulse. On the other hand, there is an approach that claims that it is much easier to lie when we speak in a second language. We can highlight, for example, the work carried out by a group of psychologists in W\u00fcrzburg who conducted a series of experiments with 50 study subjects. These subjects had to answer several questions, sometimes telling the truth and other times lying, and doing so both in their native language and in a foreign language. Some of the questions were neutral (e.g., “Is Berlin a city in Germany?”) and others had a marked emotional component (e.g., “Have you ever used drugs?”, “Would you work as a nude model?”). The researchers focused on a series of parameters during the response time, such as the time it took for subjects to respond, electrodermal activity and heart rate. Finally, they reached the following conclusions:<\/p>\n

Firstly, they observed that subjects speaking in a second language took longer to respond than those speaking in their native language. In general, however, both groups took longer to tell a lie than tell the truth. Nevertheless, the differences in time between true and false answers are less obvious in the group speaking in the second language, although this time difference is not related to the fact that more time is needed to lie since the subjects take longer to tell the truth when speaking their native language. That being said, regardless of whether the question was neutral or emotional, the differences in time when telling the truth or a lie are generally shorter when we speak in a foreign language.<\/p>\n

Researchers believe that this is because the greater the emotional distance in a foreign language, the greater the cognitive load suppressed when lying. For more information about this study, read this article<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It is apparent that further research must be carried out on this topic. The long-term results are certainly very interesting and useful, since they can add value to the processes of investigating suspects in crimes. Meanwhile, the community of people invested in understanding the impact of languages on humans will continue to follow the progress made in the area of linguistic anthropology.<\/p>\n
